Dear Student,
In February 2024 we are organising two practical courses. You are required to have followed these courses if you want to apply for a Certificate of Competency as an Officer on sailing vessels. They are not needed to get your Certificate of Knowledge, or your Certificate of Proficiency.
These are the (STCW approved) courses:
1. “Basic Safety Training” (For all crew on seagoing vessels) with the following subjects: Basic first aid, Survival at sea techniques, Personal safety and social responsibilities, Fire prevention and firefighting. The theory for this course will be offered in the weekend prior to the practical days. For the students in the Friday classes (1A and 1B) this means you will come for the theory classes on Saturday February 17th (from 09.00 to approx.18.00). The practical days are on Wednesday February 21st and Thursday February 22nd. These sessions will take place in Emmeloord (50 minutes’ drive from Enkhuizen at a company called TvK Instruction and the local swimming pool). Shortly beforehand you will receive complete instructions. It is vital that you are present during the whole course - this will be checked!
2. “Medical First Aid” (First aid at sea, necessary to obtain your Officer’s licence). We combine this course with “Medical Care”. This is more comprehensive than Medical First Aid and is necessary if you want to become 'Captain unlimited sailing area'. There is a lot of overlap and as you are already working with bandages etc. we have added this to the practical course. The practical days will take place on Monday February 19th and Tuesday February 20th at our school. Also here you will receive more information shortly beforehand.
Important: these courses are valid for a period of 5 years after they are issued. After 5 years you will need to do a so called ‘refresher’ course (which we do not offer). Even if you do not intend to be a professional sailor, these courses are very useful for those going to sea. We offer them for a good price, so take advantage of that!
Also important: the courses need to be combined with:

Also important: the courses need to be combined with:
- the KZV course in the same school year; and
- a "Pass" in the theory exam of "Medical Aid at Sea". Without this you won't be issued with a certificate!
